Sock Care Guide – How to Make Your Socks Last Longer

To keep your socks comfortable, durable, and looking new for as long as possible, follow these simple care tips.

1. Wash Socks Inside Out

Always turn socks inside out before washing. This helps remove sweat, bacteria, and skin particles while protecting the outer fabric and colors.

2. Wash at Low Temperature

Wash socks at 30–40°C (86–104°F). Lower temperatures protect cotton fibers and elastic threads, helping socks keep their shape and durability.

3. Wash Before First Wear

New socks should be washed before the first use. This removes production residues and allows the fibers to soften and settle naturally.

4. Avoid Tumble Drying

Whenever possible, air dry your socks. High heat from tumble dryers can weaken elastic fibers and shorten the lifespan of your socks.

5. Wash with Similar Colors

To maintain vibrant colors:

  • wash dark socks with dark clothing

  • wash white socks separately

  • wash bright colors with similar shades

6. Do Not Overload the Washing Machine

Avoid overloading your washing machine. Giving socks enough space reduces friction and prevents unnecessary fabric wear.

7. Store Socks Properly

Fold socks together instead of stretching them into tight balls. This helps preserve the elasticity and shape of the sock.

Athletique Classique Clean Stripes — Clear White / Red Moon

Red Moon is not a standard red. It is a warm, slightly terracotta-inflected red with earthy undertones — the red that belongs in warm light, on a bicycle in Lisbon, in spring and summer outfits rather than formal autumn ones. On a Clear White ground, the stripe reads as vivid without being aggressive: present, warm, and photographed in exactly the right conditions. 90 DKK, 82% organic combed cotton, 200-needle heavy-rib knit, OEKO-TEX certified. Designed in Copenhagen.

Colour & Styling

Red Moon sits between a pure bright red and Bordeaux's deep cool wine-red — warmer and earthier than a sport red, lighter and more vivid than Bordeaux. The terracotta quality gives it warmth that works with the natural light of southern European cities: the Lisbon bicycle shot is not a styling accident. Red Moon is the red for white sneakers, for summer outfits, for warm-weather street contexts. It is not the red for charcoal suits or formal dressing — that is Bordeaux.

The styling rule applies as always: one statement, everything else quiet. Dark navy jacket, dark shorts, white sneakers — the Red Moon stripe above the white cuff. The bicycle image is the brief. Clean outfit, one warm vivid accent above the shoe, movement implied.

Best footwear:

  • White leather sneakers — the white ground of the sock connects to the shoe; the red stripe sits above as the warm accent — see sneaker guide →
  • Chunky sneakers — the heavier sock construction suits more shoe volume
  • Low-profile canvas and vintage court shoes
  • Tan leather and suede loafers — Red Moon creates a warm complementary contrast — see loafer guide →
  • Natural leather Derby and Oxford shoes in casual contexts — see shoe guide →

Best trousers: Dark indigo denim — the definitive base · Dark navy shorts · White and off-white chinos · Khaki and olive cotton trousers (the warm earthy contrast works here) · Cropped cotton trousers · Shorts in summer

How Red Moon differs from Bordeaux:
Bordeaux (in the Fine Rib solid range) is a deep, cool wine-red — formal, autumnal, works under a suit. Red Moon is lighter, warmer, and more earthy — a spring-summer red for casual and sport-heritage contexts. Same general colour family; completely different register, occasion, and aesthetic. What Is Red Moon — the Colour Explained

Red Moon is a proprietary Democratique colour name for a warm, slightly terracotta-inflected red — not a pure bright red, not Bordeaux, but the red that sits between them with earthy warmth. The name refers to the quality of the tone: the warm, low-light red of a moon rising in a summer sky, rather than the sharp vivid red of a primary colour.

In practical terms: Red Moon is slightly less saturated than a pure sport red, and has more warmth and earthiness than a cool formal red. On a white ground it reads as vivid and deliberate — a considered red rather than a signal red. The Lisbon bicycle shot captures the colour in its natural context: warm light, warm pavement, white shoes, red stripe above the cuff.

The Fine Rib solid range also has a Red Moon solid sock in the thin dress-sock construction — the same colour, different occasion.

FAQ

What is Red Moon — how is it different from a standard red or Bordeaux?

Red Moon is a warm, slightly terracotta-inflected red — not a pure bright sport red and not the deep cool wine-red of Bordeaux. It sits between the two: warmer and earthier than a standard red, lighter and more vivid than Bordeaux. On a white ground it reads as vivid and warm rather than aggressive or formal. Bordeaux (in the Fine Rib solid range) is a dark, cool formal accent for suits and autumn dressing. Red Moon is the spring-summer, casual, sport-heritage red — the red for Lisbon on a bicycle, not charcoal wool in November.

What is the Athletique Classique — how is it different from the Originals Fine Rib?

Two completely different socks. The Originals Fine Rib (DS1006) is a thin 200-needle dress sock — 75% organic combed cotton, smooth, for dress shoes and formal contexts. The Athletique Classique (DS1528) is a heavier, chunkier crew sock — 82% organic combed cotton in a heavy-rib construction, built to be worn visibly above the shoe. For dress shoes and business formal, choose the Fine Rib. For sneakers and visible crew socks, the Athletique Classique.

What does "Clean Stripes" mean?

Clean Stripes is the specific Athletique Classique stripe pattern: a Clear White ground with a defined band of coloured stripes at the cuff, using varied stripe widths within the band. Two colours only — white ground, one coloured stripe. "Clean" distinguishes this from other Athletique Classique patterns with more complex multi-colour combinations.

Is there also a Red Moon solid dress sock?

Yes — the same colour is available as a Fine Rib solid Red Moon in the thin dress-sock construction. The colour is the same; the construction and occasion are completely different. The Fine Rib Red Moon is for dress shoes and formal-adjacent contexts; this Clean Stripes version is for crew-sock-above-the-shoe casual and sport-heritage wear.

Can women wear these socks?

Yes — the Athletique Classique is unisex. EU 41–46 fits most men and larger women's sizes. Red Moon on white is one of the most popular crossover colourways in the Clean Stripes range. This colour is also available in EU 36–40 — see the full Athletique Classique collection →

Do you ship internationally?

Yes — worldwide, with free shipping above 75€ / 75£ / 100 USD / 400 DKK. 99.2% of orders ship the same day. Full shipping information →
