Sock Care Guide – How to Make Your Socks Last Longer

To keep your socks comfortable, durable, and looking new for as long as possible, follow these simple care tips.

1. Wash Socks Inside Out

Always turn socks inside out before washing. This helps remove sweat, bacteria, and skin particles while protecting the outer fabric and colors.

2. Wash at Low Temperature

Wash socks at 30–40°C (86–104°F). Lower temperatures protect cotton fibers and elastic threads, helping socks keep their shape and durability.

3. Wash Before First Wear

New socks should be washed before the first use. This removes production residues and allows the fibers to soften and settle naturally.

4. Avoid Tumble Drying

Whenever possible, air dry your socks. High heat from tumble dryers can weaken elastic fibers and shorten the lifespan of your socks.

5. Wash with Similar Colors

To maintain vibrant colors:

  • wash dark socks with dark clothing

  • wash white socks separately

  • wash bright colors with similar shades

6. Do Not Overload the Washing Machine

Avoid overloading your washing machine. Giving socks enough space reduces friction and prevents unnecessary fabric wear.

7. Store Socks Properly

Fold socks together instead of stretching them into tight balls. This helps preserve the elasticity and shape of the sock.

Originals Fine Rib Socks — Soft Charcoal

The grey that does serious work. Soft Charcoal sits between black and mid-grey — dark enough to pair with charcoal and grey suits without creating a mismatch, light enough to distinguish itself from black against pale trousers and shoes. It fills the specific gap in the wardrobe that black cannot: when you want a dark sock that matches the trouser rather than contrasting with it. A solid, unheathered dark grey with no blue, brown, or green undertone — just a clean, cool charcoal that disappears into the outfit exactly as a well-chosen sock should. Same 200-needle organic combed cotton construction and hand-linked toe, OEKO-TEX certified, knitted in Istanbul. Designed in Copenhagen.

Colour & Styling

Soft Charcoal is a dark, solid grey — not heathered or melange like Light Grey Melange, not as absolute as Black. It occupies a specific tonal position that is genuinely useful: the grey for grey suits, grey flannel trousers, and dark charcoal wool. When the trouser is charcoal and the sock is black, there is a subtle mismatch that experienced dressers notice. Soft Charcoal eliminates that mismatch — it tones with the trouser and creates a seamless dark leg line that formal dressing requires.

Beyond formal, it functions as a dressed-down alternative to black in casual contexts: with dark denim, with charcoal chinos, with white trainers where a black sock would feel too formal. It is the colour that makes a monochromatic grey outfit work from trouser hem to shoe — part of the Monochrome Collection for a reason. It is also the natural third dark neutral alongside black and navy for anyone building a complete formal sock drawer.

Best footwear:

  • Black leather Oxford, Derby, and monk straps — the standard formal pairing for grey suits
  • Dark grey or charcoal suede shoes — tonal head-to-toe grey
  • White leather sneakers — clean contrast, slightly softer look than black socks — see sneaker guide →
  • Dark brown leather loafers and Oxford shoes — see loafer guide →
  • Dark Chelsea boots — see boots guide →

Best trousers: Charcoal grey suit trousers — the definitive pairing · Medium grey flannel or wool · Dark grey chinos · Dark denim · Black trousers (tonal near-match)

FAQ

What shade is Soft Charcoal — how dark is it?

Soft Charcoal is a dark, solid grey — closer to anthracite than mid-grey, but distinctly lighter than black. It sits in the tonal range of a charcoal suit or dark grey flannel trouser. "Soft" in the name refers to the organic cotton construction rather than a lightness of colour — this is a genuinely dark grey that reads as cool and neutral in all light conditions, with no visible blue, brown, or green undertone.

What is the difference between Soft Charcoal, Black, and Light Grey Melange?

Three distinct greys, three distinct roles. Black is the universal dark foundation — absolute, formal, works with every shoe and every dress code. Soft Charcoal is a dark grey — the tonal match for charcoal and grey trousers where black would create a subtle but visible mismatch. Light Grey Melange is a light, heathered mid-grey — casual, versatile, and the only heathered texture in the range. Soft Charcoal fills the middle ground: darker and more formal than light grey, warmer and more tonal than black when the trouser is grey.

Should I wear charcoal or black socks with a grey suit?

Charcoal is the more precise choice for grey suits, particularly charcoal and dark grey. Traditional suiting convention matches the sock to the trouser rather than the shoe — a dark grey sock against dark grey trousers creates a seamless leg line that elongates the silhouette. Black socks with a charcoal suit create a minor but perceptible mismatch that experienced eyes notice. Soft Charcoal eliminates that mismatch. With a light grey or medium grey suit, both charcoal and light grey melange work well depending on how tonal you want the pairing to be.

What shoes work best with charcoal grey socks?

Black leather shoes are the natural formal pairing — the dark shoe and dark grey sock create a cohesive dark base for a grey suit. Dark brown leather and dark charcoal suede also work well. In casual contexts, white sneakers provide a clean contrast that softens the dark grey in a way that black socks do not. Dark Chelsea boots and Derby shoes in black or dark brown are equally strong.

Are these socks organic and certified?

Yes. Made from 75% organic combed cotton, 23% polyamide, and 2% elastane. The cotton is certified organic, grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers. The finished sock carries OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, confirming every component — including the charcoal dye — has been independently tested and verified free of harmful substances.

Can I buy these as part of a multipack?

Yes — purchasing 10 or more products unlocks a 15% discount. Soft Charcoal pairs naturally with black, navy, and light grey melange to form a complete formal and smart casual neutral rotation — three greys and one navy that cover every serious situation in the wardrobe.
